Women Roundup: The great begin for Willmar Cardinals – West Central Tribune continues

The Cardinals defeated St. Cloud Tech 63-45 in a Central Lakes Conference game at the Big Red Gym.

Willmar was leading 32-21 at halftime. From there the cardinals found a rhythm at both ends and led in the second half with 29 points.

"Our defensive pressure and our intensity have increased somewhat," said Willmar head coach Dustin Carlson about the second half. "For a short time we used our full court press and challenged their rebounds and we pushed the ball a little faster."

The Cardinals were led offensively by Mackenzie Jones and Ella Shinn. Jones got 16 points and Shinn contributed 14. Jones, a recruit from the state of Southwest Minnesota, also had seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Jaida Reiman scored four steals.

Second striker Mattie Vought had 11 points for Tech.

"I was really impressed with how hard our kids can work," said Carlson of the Cardinals' 2-0 start. "You get in better shape. It's a difficult thing when you do something that you're not used to while playing in a mask. And we play fewer girls than we have in the past.

"I'm really proud of the effort."

Willmar will host Sartell at 7.15 p.m. Thursday.
