Fitness experts say barbells can be a worthwhile investment in the home gym if you are looking to step up your weight training in 2021. “If you have access to one, you can use it in a variety of different exercises to build full strength,” explained Darren Tomasso, instructor at Session NYC.

Associating "strength" with powerlifting is a fairly common misconception, Tomasso said, and that weight training makes you look bulky. Rather, he argued, "Weight training is for everyone and has innumerable benefits – regardless of your goals."
It doesn't make sense to buy a generic barbell and load up the plates.

But what exactly is a barbell and what fitness benefits does it offer? The barbell is a metal shaft, usually between three and seven feet long, with weight plates or dumbbells on either end – as opposed to its much shorter cousin, the dumbbells. According to celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak, barbells allow you to do weight training on different parts of the body, generally in a bilateral manner, using your left and right sides at the same time. People use barbells to perform compound exercises, defined as those that use multiple joints and muscles at once – like squats, chest presses, and deadlifts, noted Pasternak, who has trained celebrities from Halle Berry and Kanye West to Robert Downey Jr. and Charlie Puth. .
Keith Hodges, founder of Mind In Muscle Coaching in Los Angeles, added that weight training can help improve muscle strength, toning, posture, endurance and performance. A barbell can also help you burn calories and gain muscle mass. That's why Hodges called it "a key device in multi-joint exercises" like the squats and deadlifts mentioned above, two "key exercises for any gender or workout" Tor. "Barbells also offer a unique fitness value compared to dumbbells – the latter are considered isolateral, so you can either side individually and be able to focus more on balance and coordination, says Pasternak.
How to buy dumbbells
The professionals we consulted say the safest way is to decide how heavy your barbell and plate should determine your current fitness level. As such, Rhys Athayde, founding instructor at Dogpound, said it was "extremely important" to understand what type of barbell you are buying and what use case it is for.
There are three types of barbells: men (weighing 45 pounds), women (35 pounds), and teenagers (25 pounds). Then you need to decide whether you want an Olympic, powerlifting, or general barbell.
- Olympic barbells are typically 7 feet long and the most common type – these iron bars typically weigh around 45 pounds. They're most beneficial for athletes and crossfitters doing Olympic lifts like Power Clean, Push Jerks, and Snatches because they have fast rotating bearings in the sleeves, the end portion of the bar that you slide the weights onto. Anthony Crouchelli, Founding Master Coach at GRT BXNG, noted that Olympic barbells are the only type of barbell that is not available in youth sizes.
- Powerlifting dumbbells are stiffer and allow the lifter to put more weight on the bar before it flexes, according to Walter Savage, personal trainer at Dogpound in New York. Because powerlifting is essentially lifting as much weight as possible, you will need to use these dumbbells to safely pick up heavier plates.
- Dumbbells for general use, also called multipurpose dumbbells, are made for pretty much anyone who wants to work out in the gym or at home and weighs between 35 and 45 pounds, Hodges noted.
You also need to decide how much weight you want to move, as the weight of the bar is a factor, Athayde said. The Los Angeles-based trainer added that you should consider how much space you have in your home and budget as well. Hodges added that manufacturers make their dumbbells in a variety of diameters, with 28 millimeters (1.1 inches) being the most common. The larger the diameter of a barbell, the more support or weight capacity it offers.
When you buy bumper panels, they make less noise and damage compared to iron panels, but bumper panels also take up more space.
Best dumbbells of 2021
Here are four options that trainers say should be considered for general use, powerlifting, and Olympic training at different prices.
Of the seven coaches we spoke to, Rogue was by far the most vetted brand. Savage said the brand "is hands down the best fitness machine," while Crouchelli said that "Rogue crushes the game in the barbell department" and "offers the best price for the quality of the product on the market". Athayde called this model "a great barbell that is versatile and inexpensive" and noted its durability and "great quality". The Echo Bar 2.0 is a general use barbell and can hold up to 1,000 pounds.
Athayde also prefers this "large barbell" from American Barbell. "The mild knurling is great for your grip, the stainless steel finish looks amazing, and it's a fantastic power bar for any gym," he said. American Barbell claims that this 20kg barbell is durable and offers "very little flex". The Echo Bar 2.0 is a powerlifting style barbell and can hold up to 1,000 pounds.
Hodges is a fan of Rogue and Sorinex and considers their barbell suites to be "extremely durable". We like this Olympic model because it comes in 10 kg (22 pounds), 15 kg (33 pounds), and 20 kg (44 pounds) models, has light to medium knurling, and has a static load of 2,000 pounds. It also features Olympic and powerlifting knurled tracks for convenience.
Beyond Rogue, Tomasso recommended Titan Fitness for its list of "solid options with great access to customer service and finding the right part for you." The multi-purpose barbell weighs 20 kg and can handle up to 1,000 pounds.
Adjustable barbells, cages, and barbell alternatives
In addition to the classic barbell options mentioned above, numerous alternatives are available, e.g. B. adjustable barbells. If you are planning to grab a new barbell, consider pairing it with a cage. Here are some highly rated options to get you started.

If you live in a small space, this highly rated option from Kiss Gold may be a worthwhile choice because it is relatively compact. After choosing the 44 or 66 pound model, use any weight like dumbbells or attach the accompanying bar to turn it into a barbell.
w that you've invested in a new barbell and weight plates, you need to focus on storage and training modules. This is where weight cages come into play. Crochelli called weight cages "great" but noted "they take up a lot of space".

Why are barbells so expensive?
Dumbbells certainly require a significant investment – you'll likely spend at least $ 100 on an entry-level model. For example, Rogue, a popular fitness equipment maker, sells barbells in the mid-range of $ 100. The high-end models start at $ 780. However, the experts we consulted agreed that the initial start-up cost of a barbell is well worth it as long as you are committed to weightlifting.
"If you're serious about lifting, it doesn't make sense to buy a generic barbell and load up the plates – the bar will bend and can even tear," noted Athayde, who warned of "cheap" barbells. Instead, he advised you to assess your fitness level and invest accordingly. "If you want dynamic exercise, look at the Olympic bars and look for the deadlift, squat and bench press the powerlifting bars."
Before the pandemic, barbell prices were already high, Hodges said, noting that prices rose as demand for home fitness equipment increased. He encouraged the shopping readers to write down their fitness goals and budget.
While you can get discounts on used barbells by searching resellers like eBay or OfferUp, doing so could inadvertently cause more problems than it's worth, according to trainer David Watson of Life Time Gym in Happy Valley, Arizona. He advised caution on resale sites like Facebook Marketplace as no quality control was carried out. “Buying second hand is inexpensive, but it may not be what you want,” he said.
How heavy or light should your barbell and plate be?
Barbell plates are essentially designed for one building block format.
"It's always better to start with a solid set of 10s, 25s, and maybe a set of 45s, with the intention of adding more records to your collection as you build strength."
In addition to your experience, fitness level, strength skills, fitness goals, and commitment, Hodges recommended that clients “always” start with lighter weights in order to focus on technique and assess recovery level after each workout. This “reduces the risk of injury, and you can buy increasingly heavy equipment instead of recovering from injury due to ego or inexperience,” he said. As you lift lighter weights, you can do more repetitions to gain experience and until you are ready to upgrade to heavier plates.
