James Haskell, a rugby guy, managed to look lean and mean in lockdown by following a strict fitness and diet routine.

Former Wasps and England player, married to TV star Chloe Madeley, says: "Lockdown didn't affect my body in terms of weight gain.

“I actually got a little slimmer. I trained pretty hard, used it as a baseline and made sure I was sticking to a really good routine. "

35-year-old James is known to have lost a lot of weight when he appeared on I'm A Celebrity last year.

"After the jungle, I went from 122 to 110 kg because I had nothing to eat, but then I came to about 120 kg," he says.

Since retiring from rugby, James has jumped into training for his mixed martial arts debut.

He says, “I was in a very intense preparation regime for a fight. I trained for a few hours each six days a week.

"I had done wrestling and jiu jitsu before, but the training was the hardest thing I have ever done. It really pushed me emotionally and physically to the limit."

But when the pandemic hit, James & # 39; MMA career was suspended and he switched to a new routine to keep in shape.

He explains, “When I was fighting I was sitting about 150 pounds and then in lockdown I went up to about 150 pounds, but I was very lean. I've built a lot of muscle.

"I do strength training three to four times a week just to do a bit of bodybuilding to maintain some size. I also do HIIT conditioning on the climber, watt bike, or rowing machine, and then do more regularity condition intensity the next day .

“Mentally, I really like to keep fit in order to get really frustrated. Fitness and exercise became a real anchor to my day-to-day life during lockdown, and while other things were falling apart around me, it made a world of difference while I was exercising. "

James also paid attention to what he ate and drank during the lockdown. He says, “I find it pretty easy to eat intuitively and take care of my body.

"When it came to having a drink, I tried to limit it to the weekends, almost like 'make your drinks', and even then I tried to stick to low-calorie drinks rather than beer."

Chloe, who is now a personal trainer and nutritionist, is also helping James stay on track.

"My approach to nutrition is that when I need to be optimal, I track everything with MyFitnessPal and weigh my food," he says.

"We go to the gym together, but we very rarely work out together unless we're on vacation," he says.
