New Delhi: Navratris marks the beginning of the festive and even wedding season in India. At various festivals like Diwali, Dushehra and at least one family wedding, everyone wants to be in shape, lose weight and do their best at these events. Many people view navratris not only as a time to worship but also as a time to lose weight through fasting. However, most people gain weight instead of losing. Weight loss is a long process that requires consistency and being careful about what you eat, but also how much you eat. Ms. Shivani Bavalekar, nutritionist at the Cloudnine Group of Hospitals in Kalyani Nagar, Pune, shares insights into how eating fat-free and sugar-free foods may or may not help you lose weight and what to include in your diet for weight loss while fasting.
The Navratri Festival is full of light, dance, energy and fasting (upwas). Usually, many people fast and consume fasting for 9 days this season or we can call it "UPWAS Thali". The people who fast always feel like they are losing weight, but the fact is different. If you fast longer, the body starves and turns food into fats, resulting in weight gain rather than weight loss for many people.
Everything you need to know about a sugar-free weight loss diet
We all believe that consuming sugar-free or fat-free products will aid our weight loss, but each factor has its advantages and disadvantages.
When we say sugar-free, it means excluding sugar from the diet, which is technically impossible. Therefore, most people replace sugar with artificial sugar or saccharin. However, they fail to realize that overeating sugar-free products is synonymous with consuming sugar-filled products. Many sugar-free products contain artificial sugar along with hidden sugar, which gives you the same calories as regular sugar. The main way to lose weight and stay healthy is by eating a balanced diet consisting of lean protein, high fiber carbohydrates, and healthy fats, while also exercising regularly.
It is recommended that you replace your white sugar with jaggery, date syrup, etc., which are natural sources of sugar. However, you should consume it in moderation, that is, 5 teaspoons per day, only if your weight is normal and you are not having any comorbid conditions.
Benefits of a sugar-free diet
Weight Loss – Cutting down on sugar is just like cutting down on empty calories. Hence, this will help you lose weight, but you also need to consider the serving size of what you are consuming.
Disadvantages of the sugar-free diet
Difficult to Get To – At some point during your diet, you may crave sugar, and chances are you will eat lots of sugary foods like chocolates and desserts. Sometimes you also have a hard time telling the difference between added sugar and artificial sugar, as many products contain hidden sugars with different names.
Fat free diet for weight loss
There are fat-free products on the market, but after all, these types of products are loaded with starch, salt, and sugar which won't help you lose weight.
When it comes to health, it is more important to focus on what type of fat and how much you are consuming.
For example, if you're consuming a whole large pack of baked potato chips, it might sound healthy because it's baked, not fried. However, this can add to your weight as this product has added sugar and starch and salts to replace the missing flavors of fats.
Benefits of a fat free diet
Weight Loss – As you make an effort to reduce your fat intake, you may lose your weight, but this includes restricting your carbohydrates. However, to keep this weight down, you need to continue restricting visible fat in your diet and trying to add healthy fats like walnut, flaxseed, and safflower seeds.
Disadvantages of a fat-free diet
Fat-free diets mostly eliminate fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, which also reduces their absorption in the body. This can also affect our bone health, eyes, and skin.
Hence, fats are just as important as other nutrients, but the recommended amount is 5 teaspoons a day only if your BMI (Body Mass Index) and other factors are normal. Regardless of whether it is sugar-free or fat-free products or a diet, the portion size is more important when losing weight.
Please te: Exercise caution in pregnancy while fasting any kind as the baby's needs are specific and fasting is usually not encouraged.
