The & # 39;Keto& # 39; or ketogenic diet has been around for many years previously used clinically to treat some neurological disorders.

In an extremely low-carb approach, where carbohydrates make up less than 10 to 20 percent of total intake (only 20 to 50 grams), keto-eating induces a physiological state called "ketosis". Here the body burns ketones from fat stores for energy and not glucose from carbohydrate stores.

When carbohydrate intake is low enough to induce ketosis, weight loss can be relatively rapid, with losses of up to 2-3 kg per week.

The downside is that getting into ketosis is not that easy, as dieting 70 to 80 percent fat and very little fresh food is challenging, especially in the long run. For this reason, keto is best for those who have a relatively large amount of weight to lose (over 20 pounds) or for those who are treating a specific condition such as diabetes under the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist.

There are a number of fasting programs promoted for both your health and weight loss, including 5: 2 (two low calorie days per week) and 16: 8 or all daily calories consumed within an eight hour period.

Exposure to long periods of time without food or with minimal calories has been shown to help reset some of the hormones that control fat metabolism. Fasting regimes are also known to have a number of other long-term health benefits as the body's cells work more efficiently after calorie deprivation.

While fasting is mentioned for its weight loss benefits, the weight loss associated with it is random, at most 1-2 kg per month. Because of this, fasting is a fantastic option for long-term health, and you may experience some weight loss, but it is unlikely to see sustained losses of ½-1kg per week, as some programs do .

Low in carbohydrates


Low-carb "It" diets include Paleo, Dubrow, Dukan, and the latest offering from CSIRO. These regimens typically involve consuming 20-45 percent total carbohydrates.

Here, refined grains, fruits, starchy vegetables, and cereals are likely limited to larger amounts of high-protein foods and low-calorie fruits and vegetables.

A low-carb diet generally works well for most people initially. Weight losses of 1 to 2 kg per week occur here when the body's carbohydrate stores are depleted. However, weight loss slows down over time as the body reduces metabolism to make up for the lack of readily available fuel.

If the goal is rapid weight loss, low-carb diets are a great option. Once the weight loss slows down, it's better to increase the carbohydrate over time or use a more sustainable regime like fasting or the Mediterranean diet.
